An original, unique gift for fans of curry and those interested in Britain's curry heritage- cook an authentic balti and be inspired by the story of Birmingham's iconic balti! This unique curry lover gift includes a signed copy of 'The Balti, Its Birth, Its Boom Years And Beyond' as well as an award winning Birmingham designed and made balti bowl.
With a foreword from Michelin Birmingham based Chef Brad Carter, The Balti charts the story of one of Britain’s most iconic dishes, from its birth in 1975 in a part of Birmingham that became known as the Balti Triangle, through the height of its popularity in the 1990s to its more recent demise—though not disappearance—in competition with a proliferation of burger joints and dessert parlours. Interviews with chefs and owners give a rare insight into the running of family restaurants and the tremendous impact the balti has had on many a Birmingham business, bringing back happy memories of the ‘balti boom’ in the city, the Black Country, and beyond. As a slightly obsessed balti aficionado, Andy Munro shares some of the best and most authentic balti recipes out there, given by the greatest balti houses past and present. He also delves into the manufacturing history and health benefits of the unique Birmingham-made carbon steel ‘balti bowl’, which gives the curry its name. So grab your naans, pour your lassi, and get ready for a full-bodied celebration of Birmingham’s iconic dish—its origins, its influence, its enduring popularity, and its greatest recipes.

"The perfect book for anyone interested in balti. Munro takes you from its humble beginnings through the balti craze of the 80s up to present day. He explains exactly what an authentic balti is. STEEL FLAME AND SPICE
Care for your bowl; These bowls are manufactured from carbon steel as with all authentic baltis, which is a component derived from iron. Some discolouration is natural and cooking over a hot flame will eventually lead to the black patina beloved by Balti enthusiasts. Needless to say, these Balti bowls are best used on a natural gas flame to maximise the patina effect .
The authentic Birmingham Balti is a one pot dish- cooked and served in the same Balti dish, traditionally one bowl per person/serving. Check out our specially designed wooden stand for ease and style when serving your Balti.
